Case study: CBD as a treatment for inflammatory diseases

We summarize a scientific study on the benefits of CBD on arthritis and inflammatory joint diseases, published by the National Institute of Health. This summary presents the various stages of the study, including the method used and the results.

Patient study methods and disease treated

The study explored the effects of cannabidiol (CBD) on arthritis and joint pain. Researchers conducted a cross-sectional exploratory study, recruiting a convenience sample of 428 participants via online methods, including social networks and newsletters from arthritis-related organizations. Participants (all with inflammatory joint disease of the osteoarthritis, arthritis or rheumatoid arthritis type) completed an anonymous questionnaire between May 5, 2020 and November 5, 2020 to assess the perceived efficacy of CBD in managing arthritis symptoms. The study focused on different types of arthritis, including osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and other autoimmune forms, analyzing the impact on pain, physical function and sleep quality.

Patient study results

The study found significant improvements in arthritis symptoms in CBD users:

  • Pain reduction: 83% of participants reported a reduction in pain, with an average reduction of 44%.
  • Physical function: 66% noted improvements in physical function.
  • Sleep quality: 66% reported improved sleep quality. The osteoarthritis subgroup showed the most substantial improvements in pain and physical function compared to those with rheumatoid arthritis or other autoimmune types. In addition, 60.5% of participants reduced or stopped using other medications, including anti-inflammatory drugs, paracetamol and opioids.

Benefits of CBD on inflammatory diseases

CBD has demonstrated potential benefits in the management of inflammatory diseases such as arthritis by :

  • Reduced inflammation: Preclinical studies suggest that CBD can reduce inflammation and pain.
  • Improved quality of life: Participants reported improvements in physical function and sleep, indicating a better overall quality of life.
  • Reduced dependence on other medications: Many participants reduced their use of anti-inflammatory drugs, paracetamol and opioids, suggesting that CBD is a safer alternative for the long-term management of chronic pain and inflammation.

These findings indicate that CBD could be a viable treatment alternative for inflammatory diseases, offering symptom relief and reducing dependence on conventional drugs.
