CBD for deep sleep, how does it work?

Sleep cycles

Sleep is a fundamental physiological process for the proper functioning of our organism. Our lives are governed by the circadian sleep-wake rhythm, which enables our bodies to function optimally, with an "active" time when the body is awake, and a "rest" time when the body is (normally!) asleep.

Sleep is divided into different cycles during which the body will be in different stages of sleep, more or less deep and restorative:

The REM phase: This corresponds to moments of sleep with brain activity close to that of the waking phase.

Stage 1: The awake-sleep transition phase, when you are neither asleep nor awake.

Stage 2: Light slow wave sleep, the second phase of the sleep cycle

Stage 3: Slow, deep sleep, the first phase of the sleep cycle

These different stages of sleep vary throughout the night, mostly between midnight and 7am, and give the body the rest it needs.

These fragile sleep cycles can be disrupted by various external or internal factors, which can interrupt, shorten or simply shift them. Sleep and its cycles also change over the years, particularly in Stage 2 (slow-wave sleep), which is deeper until the age of 20 and lighter as we age, hence the correlation between aging and sleep disorders.

Disorders that affect deep sleep

16 to 20% of the population suffers from insomnia, 5% of adults suffer from sleep apnea and 8% have restless legs syndrome: these are the figures for the three most widespread sleep disorders in the world, affecting almost 30% of the global population. Insomnia, the most widespread of these conditions, is still poorly understood and poorly treated, and we'd like to tell you more about it.

Insomnia, the disease of the 21st century

Insomnia is a neurobiological and psychological disorder corresponding to a sleep deficit, whether at the time of falling asleep or maintaining deep sleep. Poorly understood, insomnia is a pathology that is being closely studied, since it affects a large proportion of the population (16%) and has a major impact on the social life of those affected.

Current drug treatments (benzodiazepines) are not what would seem to be most effective when compared to alternative treatments such as therapies or alternative medicines (plants), which is where we find the growing popularity of CBD for sleep, in the form of oil, capsules or herbal tea.

Transient or occasional, insomnia is often linked to external factors that trigger it over a defined period (a few days to several months), often including similar factors such as :

  • Stress
  • Depression
  • Food problem
  • Pain
  • Consumption of stimulants (coffee, tea...)

If insomnia occurs more than three times a week for three months or more, it becomes chronic and needs to be taken seriously (medical or therapeutic support). Three factors are linked to chronic insomnia:

  • Predisposing factors: Genetic predisposition (history of light sleep) or psycho-social predisposition (childhood trauma).
  • Precipitating factor : External factor that triggers insomnia (the most common) such as stress, a life event, work situation, overwork...
  • Maintenance factor: Factors that maintain insomnia and allow it to become part of daily life, such as behavioral habits (spending a lot of time in bed during the day, watching movies lying in bed, etc.).

Good sleep for good health

Sleep is excellent for the body, reducing the risk of certain pathologies and improving overall health.

Here are 8 health benefits of sleep:

  • Improves mood
  • Better heart health
  • Regulates blood sugar levels
  • Improves mental functions
  • Restores the immune system
  • Reduces stress
  • Better energy
  • Reduces the risk of obesity

Poor sleep increases the risk of disease

Sleep deprivation can trigger certain pathologies and create physiological upheavals leading to a disruption of the organism.

For example, the risk of catching a cold is multiplied by 4% when you're sleep-deprived, and in teenagers, sleep deprivation correlates with low levels of grey matter (linked to brain activity).

Nights of less than 6 hours increase the chances of developing type 2 diabetes by almost 28%. In fact, the disruption of circadian rhythm and the synthesis of certain hormones (cortisol, growth hormone) involved in glucose metabolism, creates glucose intolerance and the development of type 2 diabetes.

The risk of weight gain correlates with shorter nights and less exercise during waking hours (due to fatigue and daytime sleepiness). Several studies have established a correlation between the current global obesity crisis (from 10% to 25% obese) and the reduction in sleep time, which has been cut by over 2h30 in recent years.

Sleep is a vector of immunity: certain immune cells (leukocytes, lymphocytes) function on the basis of a circadian rhythm, and when they are deprived of sleep, their production is altered. And an inverse mechanism also proves that sleep is important: when we are subject to viral infections, our body automatically lengthens our sleep cycle (we need a longer night to recover), proving that sleep duration has a direct impact on good health.

Interaction of CBD and CBN with the endocannabinoid system

Cannabinoids such as CBD and CBN interact via the endocannabinoid system present in our central nervous system, acting as agonists or antagonists on different receptors and enzymes in the body. These different interactions regulate the body's homeostasis (weight management, stress, anxiety, sleep, pain...) and accompany numerous pathologies.

CBN: The benefits of the sleep cannabinoid

CBN is a wellness cannabinoid less well-known than CBD, but just as beneficial to health. It has a very high affinity for the CB1 receptor of the endocannabinoid system, enabling it to have a very significant sedative, anti-inflammatory and calming action.

It is thanks to this action that CBN has gained popularity for its benefits in sleep disorders (insomnia, nocturnal awakenings, sleep apnea...). Its strong sedative power puts the body in an ideal state for falling asleep and promotes deep sleep.

A scientific study carried out on 20 people even showed that cannabinol improves sleep cycles and deep sleep time.

CBN does offer benefits for sleep, but these benefits are greater when CBN is surrounded by other cannabinoids such as CBD, in what's known as the entourage effect. The entourage effect corresponds to the synergy of cannabinoids when they are present together within an extraction (oil), they will potentiate each other and offer greater benefits.

CBD: Regulates homeostasis in the human body

CBD, the wellness cannabinoid found in the cannabis plant, has come to dominate the natural products market in recent years. Indeed, its ability to regulate the body's homeostasis, impacting various physiological processes such as sleep, anxiety and stress, has earned it a reputation as an "alternative medicine". Although it is not authorized as a medicine in France, it remains legal for consumption.

Its interaction with the endocannabinoid system enables it to act on serotonin levels via 5-HT1A receptors. Serotonin plays a fundamental role in maintaining the circadian sleep-wake rhythm, thanks to its link with melatonin production. CBD therefore promotes sleep onset and deep sleep by regulating serotonin levels.

What's more, it also plays a role in relieving stress and anxiety, two factors regularly found in diagnoses of insomnia or sleep disorders. Soothing the body through its various interactions, CBD is the perfect cannabinoid for sleep problems.

FAQ

Is CBD harmful to health?

No, CBD is not dangerous for your health, and no CBD "overdose" can be made, since beyond 160mg ingested per day, the body no longer assimilates the cannabidiol and the surplus is simply "destroyed".

Only side effects such as nausea or digestive problems may occur in the event of overdose, and these are very rare, depending on the organism (more or less receptive).

Can I take CBD at the same time as sleeping pills?

CBD may interact with certain medications, but it can be tolerated by the body when taken in conjunction with sleeping pills. However, because of the enzymatic inhibition that CBD has, simultaneous intake of sleeping pills and CBD should be monitored, and you should always ask your doctor before starting CBD if you are already taking sleeping pills.

If your doctor agrees, we recommend that you start taking CBD at a low dose, while gradually reducing your intake of sleeping pills. The aim is not to combine the two at high doses.

What drug interactions can CBD have?

Cannabidiol can interact with various molecules found in medications. No health risk or danger, however, drug interaction can diminish or cancel out the effect of the drug and/or CBD.

We have set up a CBD oil user guide with a " Drug Interaction " section (part 7) listing the various molecules with which CBD should not be consumed. Find out more before consuming CBD oil.

What is the dosage for CBD sleep oil?

The recommended dosage is 4 drops every evening just before going to bed:

  • 40mg CBD
  • 40mg CBN
  • 2mg Melatonin

This is the maximum dose (2mg of melatonin per day maximum according to ANSES).

You can divide it by 2 if you wish to start (2 drops).

This dosage is established in compliance with European legislation on foodstuffs.

Directions for use, 30 minutes before bedtime (after eating):

  • Shake your oil bottle
  • Place 4 drops of sleep oil under your tongue
  • Leave on for 30sec to 1min without swallowing (so that the oral mucosa can absorb the oil).
  • Swallowing what's left after this
    time

Enjoy a quick fall asleep and a deep sleep!

What is the correct dosage for sleeping CBD capsules?

The recommended daily dose of CBD is 50mg, and the maximum daily dose of melatonin according toANSES recommendations is 2mg.

For this reason, we propose an adapted and gradual dosage according to needs:

Start with one capsule a night (25mg CBD, 25mg CBN and 1mg melatonin) for one week to ten days. If after this period you don't feel any improvement in the quality of your sleep, you can switch to two capsules a night (i.e. 50mg CBD, 50mg CBN and 2mg melatonin).

Two capsules per evening is the maximum dose.

How to use CBD capsules?

We recommend that you take our capsules in the evening, after eating and, more precisely, 30 minutes before going to bed.

Place the capsule in your mouth and drink a glass of water to swallow it gently. You'll feel the benefits 30 minutes to 1 hour after taking it.

Don't wait any longer...
